When I went out to grab lunch today I noticed lots of bikes.  The first one that caught my eye was an older bearded fellow on a Brompton folder.  Its interesting to see the diversity of bike styles in Portland.  I ride to work most days, so I see lots of bikes around town, but it’s starting to feel like there’s higher volume than last year.  I’ve heard that bus ridership is up and car commuting volume on the highways is down.  And anecdotally I’ve heard that bike shops have had an increase in sales and service in the last few months.  There are so many factors at work here, how could one make statistical sense of this trend?  Some cities, including Portland, already have the infrastructure and will probably increase their rates of cycling for short trips and commutes more quickly.  But a lot of cities have a long way to go before average people feel safe getting from point A to point B on two wheels.
